So You Want to Preach on Religious Liberty? Here’s How.
I can’t tell you how often pastors say to me, “I wish there were some good examples on how to preach on religious liberty. The topic seems so abstract and controversial, I don’t know where to begin and how to make this issue connect with my people.”
Well, I have good news for you.
On July 3, two pastors whom I’m blessed to know as friends—Jed Coppenger and David Prince—both providentially preached sermons at their churches that dealt explicitly with religious liberty. Jed Coppenger is the Lead Pastor of Redemption City Church in Franklin, Tennessee (my church) and David Prince (my former preaching professor) is Pastor of Preaching and Vision at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky.
I recommend these sermons heartily. Neither of these sermons are designed to put Christians in a fever-pitch about the loss of Christian culture nor enflame the culture war, but rather show why Christians ought to care about protecting not only our own freedom, but the freedom of others against an encroaching state. Drs. Coppenger and Prince are fantastic preachers, strong exegetes, and culturally attentive to what’s happening in the world.

If you’re a pastor aware of what’s going on in the world of religious liberty and the erosion of conscience in today’s culture, these sermons are terrific examples of how to preach on religious liberty with the gospel at the center.
